Presenting Compact Hausdorff Spaces via The Ultrafilter Monad
For Abelian groups, we have a notion of presentation that we all know and love. It turns out that we can generalize this notion to any category of algebras, and it will be shown that the category of compact Hausdorff spaces ends up being equivalent to one such category of algebras. I will talk about this equivalence and how we can present compact Hausdorff spaces using category theoretic tools. No familiarity with monads or algebras will be assumed!
10/17 Asten Fallavollita (Texas State University) CW Complexes are a “nice” sort of space that have many applications in algebraic topology. In this talk we’ll discuss their definition, explore some examples (and non-examples), and end with a surprising connection between CW complexes and set theory.
